An agricultural building at Berryfields Farm in Meriden has been approved by Solihull planners for conversion into a children’s day nursery, despite strong opposition from Meriden Parish Council.
Chris Barber Limited initially submitted a prior notification application in April to convert part of the existing 41m by 27m agricultural structure on Berksell Road. The building, previously used for storing farm machinery, maintenance materials, and straw, was deemed “suitable and sufficiently robust” for redevelopment following a structural survey.
The proposal outlines the nursery would accommodate up to 96 children. However, during the consultation period last month, Meriden Parish Council voiced serious concerns regarding the project. Their objections highlighted potential increases in traffic along Berkswell Road, noise disturbance from both construction and daily use, and the safety risks posed by the absence of pavements for pedestrians, particularly children and adults walking to the site. The council also cited poor visibility at the entrance and exit points on Berkswell Road.

Despite these objections, a highway technical report by Roberts Highway Consultants found that the existing site access was adequate to support the proposed development. The report concluded the project did not conflict with planning policies, supporting Solihull Council’s decision.
On May 27, Mark Andrews, the council’s Head of Planning, Design, and Engagement Services, granted approval for the application, subject to specific conditions.
