McDonald’s responds to concerns over new Stirchley restaurant plans

McDonald’s has responded to the controversy surrounding its proposed new restaurant in Stirchley, a south Birmingham suburb, as work begins at the potential site.

The fast food chain has submitted revised plans for a drive-thru outlet located at the corner of Pershore Road and Hazelwell Lane. These proposals have met resistance from some local residents who worry about increased traffic and the preservation of Stirchley’s distinct character, which is known for its wide variety of independent venues.

Opponents of the project have organised protests during the summer, carrying signs with messages such as “Stirchley’s not lovin’ it” and “down with the clown.” Despite these divisions, McDonald’s has moved forward with a planning application and has started initial technical investigations at the location.

A supporting document from consultancy Cavendish, submitted with the application, acknowledges public concerns, particularly regarding the area’s character. It argues, however, that the proposed restaurant is designed to complement Stirchley’s existing independent food offerings rather than detract from them.

The document explains that the new McDonald’s outlet would provide quick, convenient, and affordable food options that cater to a different customer base, potentially broadening choice and attracting additional visitors. It describes the restaurant as a “reliable, long-standing anchor” that can coexist alongside local independent businesses.

McDonald’s has expressed commitment to positively contributing to the Stirchley community. The company has plans to support local sponsorship and volunteering efforts, with the site expected to generate between £50,000 and £60,000 annually in business rates for Birmingham City Council to fund local services.

The proposal is also said to create between 100 and 200 jobs, bring an underused site back into use, and support local charities.

Regarding traffic concerns, the application states that access would be via Hazelwell Lane, off a one-way section of Pershore Road. This location, it says, reduces the likelihood of queuing or congestion. McDonald’s also plans off-site improvements including a widened footway and cycleway and an improved pedestrian crossing at Hazelwell Lane, aiming to ensure smooth integration with the area and support for community accessibility.

A McDonald’s spokesperson commented: “As part of our plans for a new McDonald’s restaurant in Stirchley, we have carried out initial technical investigations at the site, including checks of existing underground utilities, to help inform our proposals. Our planning application remains subject to determination, and we look forward to continuing to work with Birmingham City Council as it progresses.”
