Network Rail has issued a travel warning for the upcoming May Bank Holidays, highlighting important engineering works that will affect certain key routes. While the majority of Britain’s rail network will remain open and largely unaffected, some busy locations will experience service changes and replacements.
Significant work is underway at Tollerton junction on the East Coast Main Line in North Yorkshire. From Saturday through Monday, bus replacements will operate between York and Darlington, with a limited train service available between Northallerton and Darlington.
The Transpennine Route Upgrade—a major project enhancing the line between Manchester, Huddersfield, and Leeds—begins on Saturday and is expected to continue through May and June. This upgrade includes the installation of overhead electrification, new bridges, track enhancements, and station improvements.

Liverpool Lime Street station will be closed on Sunday and Monday only for the installation of new signalling near Edge Hill.
Near London, track laying around Willesden and Primrose Hill will reduce services in and out of London Euston. Additionally, there will be no London Overground services between Euston and Kilburn High Road during this time, with normal operations resuming on Tuesday.
Anit Chandarana, Network Rail’s Group Director of System Operator, explained, “Bank holidays remain some of the least busy times in terms of passenger and freight traffic. This allows us to carry out extended projects that wouldn’t be possible during normal weekends or overnight work.”
Chandarana advised passengers to plan ahead and check services before traveling, noting that while most of the network remains open, significant projects in Yorkshire and between Newport and Bristol will impact journeys.
