Matty Cash has expressed strong confidence that the “new Villa” squad will come together effectively despite the significant summer overhaul. He pushed back against external criticism focused on Aston Villa’s large summer investment and the number of starting players replaced.
During the summer transfer window, Villa signed ten new players, following the departure of more than half the starting XI who played against SC Freiburg in the Europa League final in May. Key exits included Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Ezri Konsa, with Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez leaving in the final days of the window.
This major rebuild has contributed to a slow start to the season for Villa. Several new signings such as Johan Manzambi, Ibrahim Mbaye, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Leon Goretzka have yet to debut, while Brian Madjo is sidelined by injury and Joao Gomes was sent off on his first appearance.

Villa secured their first point of the season with a goalless draw against Hull City at the MKM Stadium, following heavy defeats against Brighton (4-0) and Arsenal (1-0) in their opening matches.
Speaking after the draw, Cash acknowledged the challenge but remained upbeat: “We know it is different circumstances, but last season we struggled at the start and then began to improve. This is a new Villa, really. Hopefully, with continued hard work on the training pitch, results will come.”
He added, “It’s a big change. We’ve had new players coming in and some of the old players leaving. We want to keep improving. Our manager is unbelievable-he’s achieving results and developing young players. We’ll keep positive. We’re definitely going to be alright and improve week by week.”
Discussing adaptation, Cash commented, “You need to adapt quickly. As the manager said, the experienced players who have been here a while must help guide the others. We need to gel with their quality and the new players must understand our style of play. It’s a work in progress. This is a new Villa and we will be fine, 100 per cent.”
On handling pressure, he noted, “Playing at this level comes with pressure; you have to see it as a privilege. Getting a point on the road might be viewed differently in a few months-maybe fans will say it was a good point to get away at Hull. Look at Manchester United-they struggled here and lost. While not scoring isn’t ideal, we got a point.”
Regarding the departure of Watkins and Martinez late in the window, Cash was candid: “You don’t want to make excuses. We know the circumstances aren’t great. Losing so many key players quickly isn’t easy. I don’t want to excuse us but we must adapt quickly.”
He continued, “We have brought in brilliant players and spent money too. I mentioned last week that we spent money and got some criticism from Arsenal fans for that. But losing six or seven key starters in a short period means it will take time to settle. We will be alright. We just need to keep working, stay positive, and things will improve.”
