Martin Lewis Urges 900,000 UK Residents to Claim Free Pension Credit

Martin Lewis, the founder of Money Saving Expert, has issued an urgent alert warning nearly one million UK residents are missing out on valuable financial support through Pension Credit.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Lewis called on his followers to share this important message. He highlighted that Pension Credit can be worth thousands of pounds, yet around 900,000 eligible pensioners have not yet claimed it.

Lewis explained that those of State Pension age—typically around 66 and older—with low weekly incomes should check their eligibility. Single individuals earning under £238 per week are likely to qualify, but even those earning under £255 weekly are encouraged to check their status. For couples, both at State Pension age, a combined weekly income below £363 usually means eligibility, with potential benefits extending up to £380 per week.

“Don’t delay—call or check online to see if you qualify,” Lewis urged.

Eligibility can be checked on the government website Gov.uk, or by calling 0800 99 1234 (or 0808 100 6165 in Northern Ireland).

Beyond topping up income, Pension Credit provides additional advantages. Those aged 75 and over can qualify for a free TV Licence. Other potential benefits include Housing Benefit for renters, support for Mortgage Interest on owned homes, Council Tax reductions, assistance with NHS dental treatment, help with eyewear and travel costs for hospital visits, heating bill discounts via the Warm Home Discount Scheme, and a discounted Royal Mail redirection service for movers.

This comprehensive range of support underscores the importance of checking eligibility and claiming any entitled benefits.
