Marks & Spencer to Close Swansea Oxford Street Store, Putting Over 90 Jobs at Risk

Marks & Spencer has officially confirmed the closure of its Oxford Street store in Swansea city centre, impacting 92 employees. Staff were informed on Tuesday morning and will now enter consultations to explore potential redeployment opportunities at other M&S locations.

While no specific date for the closure has been set, the store is expected to cease operations later in 2026. The company has not yet disclosed details regarding possible redundancies.

Richard Owen, M&S regional manager, explained the decision as part of the retailer’s broader UK-wide store rotation strategy, aimed at adapting to evolving customer shopping behaviors. Owen highlighted that the Swansea store, despite its long-standing presence in the community, faces operational challenges and has experienced prolonged underperformance, making continued investment unfeasible.

“Our priority is supporting colleagues throughout the consultation process and seeking alternative roles at nearby stores whenever possible,” Owen said. He added that M&S will continue to serve Swansea customers through other local stores and online shopping, while actively searching for a new full-line store location in Swansea.
