Mapping the Surge in Birmingham’s Exempt Accommodation

Birmingham has witnessed a significant increase in exempt accommodation in recent years, with the number of residents reaching 33,904 across 12,166 properties. This figure marks a threefold rise since 2018, highlighting a substantial growth in this type of housing within the city.

Exempt accommodation refers to properties that are excluded from certain housing regulations and are often used to house vulnerable individuals who require support. The rapid expansion of such housing has raised concerns about concentration levels in particular areas.

In response to this trend, authorities have mapped the distribution of exempt accommodation across Birmingham and identified 13 areas as the worst-affected hotspots. These locations have seen a particularly high density of residents in exempt accommodation, emphasising the need for targeted policy attention and support services.
