Matej Ciroka has been sentenced to 18 months in prison and banned from keeping animals for life after brutally stabbing his seven-month-old sharpei puppy, Aki, to death. The horrific incident took place in May 2024 at Beardmore Court, Stoke-on-Trent.
Ciroka brought the injured puppy to a veterinary clinic in Stoke-on-Trent, claiming that Aki had fallen onto a coffee table and was struggling to breathe. However, veterinary staff quickly discovered the dog had sustained a two-centimeter deep stab wound to his right rib. Despite their efforts, Aki showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead.
A veterinary nurse described discovering the wound and noted the absence of bruising, raising concerns that the injury was deliberately inflicted. Following the discovery, the RSPCA was notified, and Aki’s body was taken into police custody for a post-mortem examination.

At Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on December 15, Ciroka admitted causing unnecessary suffering under the Animal Welfare Act. During proceedings, he expressed remorse and revealed he was suffering from several physical and mental health issues.
RSPCA inspector Amy Pellegrini commented on the case, emphasizing that all animals deserve kindness and respect. She urged anyone worried about how they are treating their pets or who fears they could cause harm to seek help immediately.
