Man in his 50s fatally struck, woman injured in Birmingham hit-and-run

A tragic hit-and-run incident on Soho Road in Birmingham claimed the life of a man in his 50s and left a woman in her 40s seriously injured.

The pair were struck by a Vauxhall Corsa outside Pak Supermarket in Handsworth at approximately 11:20 AM on Tuesday, December 16. Despite immediate advanced life support provided by emergency responders, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman sustained leg injuries and remains hospitalized at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The driver fled immediately after the collision. Police later located the Vauxhall Corsa near the scene but are actively seeking information from the public. West Midlands Police urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam or mobile footage to come forward by calling 101, referencing incident number 1819 of 16 December.

The road remains closed between Grove Lane and Rose Hill Road as investigations continue. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

West Midlands Ambulance Service dispatched three ambulances, two paramedic officers, and a critical care car to the scene. A spokesperson detailed the emergency response, emphasizing the severity of the man’s condition upon arrival and the woman’s serious but stable state.

At the scene, police set up a blue tent outside the supermarket and placed evidence markers around the area. A damaged dark-coloured Range Rover was also noted. Pedestrian and vehicle access is restricted, although nearby worshippers are being directed through specific entry points. The Number 74 bus service is currently diverted.

Families of the deceased are being supported by specially trained officers during this difficult time.
