Man Dies and Several Injured After Sign Collapse at West Sussex Christian Festival

A tragic incident occurred at the Big Church Festival in West Sussex on Friday afternoon, resulting in the death of a man and injuries to at least six others. The festival, held annually near Steyning off Washington Road, was disrupted after a large sign collapsed, causing multiple casualties.

The deceased has been identified as a 41-year-old man from Eastbourne, East Sussex. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sussex Police confirmed that his next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.

Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh expressed his condolences, stating, “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts go out to the man’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.” He added that the wounded had been transported to hospital for treatment and acknowledged the distress caused to festival attendees.

Authorities are actively investigating the cause of the collapse and are appealing to the thousands present at the event to come forward with any information or relevant video footage. Those with information are encouraged to report it online or by calling 101, referencing Operation Igloo.

In response to the incident, festival organisers issued an urgent statement on Instagram shortly after 5.30pm, announcing the cancellation of that day’s programme and instructing all day visitors to leave the site immediately. Subsequently, the organisers confirmed that the entire event, which was scheduled to continue until Sunday, had been cancelled.

A spokesperson for the Big Church Festival said: “We are devastated by the serious incident that took place at Big Church Festival 2026 today, in which a sign fell, injuring at least seven people, one of whom tragically lost their life. Our thoughts are with those affected, their families and friends, and everyone who witnessed the event. Following today’s incident, we have decided to bring Big Church Festival 2026 to a close.”

Sussex Police maintained a presence at the festival site throughout Friday night and advised the public to avoid the area. The Health and Safety Executive and local authorities have been notified of the incident as investigations continue.
