Man, 29, sentenced after partner suffers black eye in hotel altercation

A 29-year-old man was handed a community order after admitting to assaulting his partner, causing her to sustain a swollen and black eye during an argument at a Birmingham hotel.

During the hearing at Birmingham Magistrates Court on 17 August, prosecutor Mehnaz Mallik outlined the circumstances of the incident. The court heard that the victim and defendant had been spending time together in a hotel when a housekeeper overheard a disturbance. Upon investigation, the housekeeper found the victim with visible injuries.

Ms Mallik explained that the victim had suffered a single punch during the altercation, which resulted in a swollen right eye, bruising to her face, and a headache. Thankfully, no bone injuries were reported. It was also noted that the woman later went into the bathroom, where the defendant allegedly pushed his way in before striking her.

There was no victim impact statement submitted, and the victim does not support the prosecution.

Defence solicitor Mrs Jan informed the court that her client pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity to the offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. She added that the argument centred on money belonging to the defendant. The solicitor also revealed that the defendant has no prior convictions but suffers from mental health issues and a lack of consequential thinking.

The magistrates sentenced the man to a 15-month community order, which will run until November 2027. Conditions include 25 rehabilitation activity days, trial monitoring for 120 days, a £300 fine, a £120 victim surcharge, and £85 in court costs.

One magistrate addressed the defendant directly, emphasising the importance of engaging with community activities. “I know you are not doing unpaid work but being at home will not be helping your mental health. Get out and about and try and alter your mindset,” they said.
