Major UK Supermarket to Close Three Stores Across England

The Co-operative Group, one of the UK’s leading supermarket chains, has announced it will close three stores across England next week as part of a broader cost-cutting strategy. This decision comes after a difficult financial year marked by a reported loss of £2.6 million.

The affected branches include the Bedminster store in South Bristol, which has been operating for 15 years, as well as locations in Moggs Mead, Petersfield, and Salisbury Road in Blandford. These stores will officially close their doors on Tuesday, February 24.

A spokesperson for Southern Co-op explained, “Due to ongoing market changes and rising operating costs, we have decided to sell three of our food convenience stores. This is part of our wider efforts to optimise our store portfolio and strengthen our long-term business model amid external challenges and intense competition.”

The company reassured that store closures do not reflect the commitment or performance of staff members. With over 300 stores nationwide, Southern Co-op emphasized its intent to support affected employees by exploring opportunities for transfer to other locations whenever possible. “While this may not be feasible for everyone, we are dedicated to supporting all impacted colleagues throughout this process,” the spokesperson added.

The Co-op also expressed gratitude to customers for their loyalty and apologized for any disappointment caused by the closures.

This announcement follows a similar closure in January, when the Co-op shut its New Forest store, citing the same strategic efforts to optimise its portfolio and operating model.
