Major UK Discount Retailer Enters Administration, Four Stores Closed Permanently

The Original Factory Shop, a prominent UK discount retailer, is undergoing a significant restructuring after entering administration earlier this year. In January, owner Modella Capital revealed that the business no longer had a “realistic possibility of trading profitably again,” prompting immediate store closures and a reduction in operations.

Four locations have already shut permanently, including stores in Prudhoe, Ballycastle, Portrush, and Warrenpoint. Amid this upheaval, the Bridgnorth store has commenced a clearance sale, offering shoppers discounts of up to 20% on a range of items. Despite the ongoing uncertainty about the company’s future, the store remains open with new stock arriving regularly, encouraging customers to take advantage of the current bargains.

In a recent Facebook update, the Bridgnorth store addressed customer inquiries about closing dates, stating, “We are still unsure of the exact timeline but will provide updates as soon as possible. Meanwhile, we continue to receive excellent stock at amazing discounted prices, so come in and grab some bargains while we are still here.”

The administration has put over 100 sites at risk across the UK, spanning England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The extensive network includes stores in towns and cities such as Abergele, Alnwick, Ayr, Bathgate, Bexhill, Bridport, Cinderford, Dumfries, Hartlepool, Lancaster, Melton Mowbray, Oban, Penrith, Romsey, Saltash, Thurso, Warwick, and many others.

This development raises concerns about the future of discount retailing on the UK high street, where the Original Factory Shop has been a familiar presence for shoppers seeking affordable goods. For now, customers are urged to visit their local stores to take advantage of the clearance sales before further closures occur.
