Major UK Bank Acquisition: Virgin Money Customers to Transfer to Nationwide from April

In a significant development for UK banking, Virgin Money has been acquired by Nationwide Building Society, with the full transfer of Virgin Money customers scheduled for April 2026. Following the merger announced in October 2024, both banks are now operating under the same group, and regulatory approval has been secured to finalize the integration.

After receiving Court approval on 23 February 2026, Virgin Money’s operations will officially merge into Nationwide on 2 April 2026. Nationwide, known for its extensive branch network including locations in Birmingham, is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for all customers.

“We are working to make the transfer as smooth and seamless as possible,” stated Nationwide. “If you hold one or more Virgin Money accounts, we will contact you directly with the next steps. Day-to-day banking will continue unchanged, and you can manage your accounts as usual.”

While there may be changes as the two businesses unify, Nationwide promises to provide ample notice and clear explanations for any adjustments that impact customers.

Customer deposits will continue to be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). Post-transfer, individual deposits will be covered up to £120,000 per person, or £240,000 for joint accounts, including combined deposits across Nationwide and Virgin Money.

Nationwide will proactively reach out to customers with deposits exceeding these limits in February 2026 to discuss available options.

Chief Executive Debbie Crosbie commented on the merger’s benefits: “Nationwide is now a stronger mutual, able to deliver greater value through our unique branch promise, leading customer satisfaction, and competitive savings and lending rates.”

She added, “All Virgin Money profits will be retained for the benefit of customers, and, for the first time in the UK, a full-service business bank will be part of a large and modern mutual.”
