Major Road Changes Coming to Birmingham: New 30mph Limits and Speed Cameras Announced

Significant transformations are set to reshape Birmingham’s road network starting in 2026, as city officials announce sweeping new measures designed to slow traffic and improve safety.

The key change will see speed limits reduced from 40mph to 30mph on 27 principal roads, with the council stating that virtually all roads within the city will adopt a 30mph maximum speed limit. This new limit aims to curb speeding and reduce the frequency and severity of road collisions.

In addition to the speed reductions, six new average speed camera locations will be installed across Birmingham to enforce compliance. Police and council leaders emphasize that these measures will be accompanied by strict enforcement, meaning drivers who disregard the new limits risk fines and penalty points on their driving licenses.

Council leader Cllr Majid Mahmood voiced strong support for the initiative, noting, “Together we must do whatever it takes to make roads safer for everyone, which is what our Road Harm Reduction strategy sets out. We are introducing these limits later this year and working closely with police on additional actions like red light cameras.”

New signage will be installed soon to inform motorists of the updated regulations, making clear that road safety is now a top priority across Birmingham.

Drivers accustomed to Birmingham’s roads should prepare for these changes and adapt their driving habits accordingly, recognizing that road safety is a shared responsibility and driving remains a privilege—not a right.
