Major Green Jobs Initiative in Wolverhampton Poised for Approval

A significant initiative to convert brownfield land into a thriving hub for green technology jobs in Wolverhampton is on track to receive approval. The West Midlands Combined Authority’s Investment Board is expected to allocate over £6 million toward the ambitious ‘Six Mile Green’ project.

This funding will enable redevelopment of two hectares across four plots near the University of Wolverhampton Science Park. The plan envisions creating more than 12,000 square meters of commercial space, attracting upwards of £22 million in total investment, and generating as many as 595 permanent jobs along with 110 construction roles during development.

The Six Mile Green project is a cornerstone of Wolverhampton’s Green Innovation Corridor programme, itself part of the broader West Midlands Combined Authority Investment Zone. Earlier funding awards include £7 million allocated in 2024 and an additional £750,000 last December to support preparatory work.

Importantly, the project is committed to inclusive economic growth. It prioritizes opportunities for local residents, especially those from underrepresented or disadvantaged communities, aiming to reduce unemployment and boost local incomes. By fostering growth in key sectors such as green industries, advanced manufacturing, and research and development (R&D), Six Mile Green will cultivate a dynamic environment for innovation and business growth.

The development will host multiple green industry companies, facilitating knowledge exchange and enhancing productivity through concentrated industry presence. Collaboration with the University of Wolverhampton and local colleges will ensure tailored skills training programs and career pathways for local residents, aligned with the needs of incoming businesses.

The West Midlands Combined Authority Investment Board is scheduled to review the complete business case for the project in a meeting on December 11, marking a critical step toward realizing this transformative vision for Wolverhampton’s economy and environment.
