Major Crackdown on Illegal Street Racing Near Birmingham Airport Proposed

A significant crackdown targeting illegal street racing near Birmingham Airport is on the horizon. Solihull Council is set to decide on implementing a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) covering Damson Parkway in Elmdon and Bickenhill Parkway in Marston Green. These roads have been plagued by dangerous and disruptive activities linked to street racing.

According to a recent council report, street racing has become a persistent hazard across parts of the West Midlands, severely impacting public safety and community wellbeing. The PSPO aims to curb not only racing but also related anti-social behaviours, including excessive noise, reckless driving, and intimidating pedestrians.

Council officers highlight that such actions not only jeopardise the safety of racers and spectators but also disturb local residents and hinder the safe use of public areas. Evidence from police call data over the past three years shows these two roads are disproportionately affected by these problems.

The enforcement of the PSPO would follow a graduated approach led by West Midlands Police. Typically, first offenders would receive a warning, with subsequent breaches attracting a £100 fixed penalty notice. Persistent non-compliance could lead to prosecution.

The authority to enact PSPOs comes under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. If approved, the order would be valid for three years and would prohibit activities tied to street racing and its associated disturbances. Violating the PSPO carries a criminal offence with a maximum fine of £2,500.

Councillor Wazma Qais, portfolio holder for communities and the decision-maker on the matter, is due to announce the outcome at a virtual meeting on Wednesday, March 18, starting at 6 pm. The meeting will be accessible via the council’s website.

This follows Councillor Qais’ successful introduction of a similar PSPO in Chelmsley Wood last year to address anti-social behaviour there.
