Major Changes to Birmingham Council Tips: Extended Hours Until End of January

Birmingham City Council has announced extended opening hours for all household waste centres across the city during the busy festive season. Starting Sunday, 21 December, all five council tips will be open from 7am to 9pm on weekdays and from 8am to 6pm on weekends. These extended hours will remain in effect until 31 January, making it easier for residents to recycle and dispose of household waste conveniently.

There are a few exceptions to these times: on Christmas Eve, the centres will open at 7am but close earlier at 6pm. The tips will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. On New Year’s Eve, the centres will operate from 7am to 6pm.

Visitors are reminded that pre-booking is required for all tips except Castle Bromwich. Councillor Majid Mahmood emphasized that these longer hours are designed to make recycling more accessible and convenient during one of the year’s busiest periods.

In other news, an ongoing industrial dispute between Birmingham City Council and Unite the Union is expected to continue into 2026. A third large-scale “megapicket” organized by Strike Map is planned for 6am on 30 January. This demonstration aims to disrupt operations at all five depot sites in Birmingham and Coventry, following previous successful actions in May and July.
