Maccabi Tel Aviv Manager Žarko Lazetić Addresses Europa League Clash Amid Heightened Security

Maccabi Tel Aviv manager Žarko Lazetić spoke to the media at Villa Park on Wednesday evening ahead of his team’s Europa League fixture against Aston Villa.

The match, taking place on Thursday night, sees Villa aiming to bounce back after recent setbacks in the competition. However, the game will be held under extraordinary circumstances, with no away supporters permitted in the stadium. The Safety Advisory Group (SAG), responsible for issuing match safety certificates, decided to block traveling fans due to security concerns.

Despite government efforts to change this decision, Maccabi Tel Aviv chose not to sell away tickets, prioritizing the safety of their supporters. Meanwhile, several protest groups plan to gather outside Villa Park on match day, with an extensive police presence of over 700 officers deployed as part of the heightened security operation.

When asked about these circumstances, Lazetić emphasized the team’s concentration on the sport itself. Reflecting on Aston Villa’s recent loss to Go Ahead Eagles, he commented, “It’s difficult to take much from that game. They have one of the best coaches in the world, and we have studied their style closely. They play with clear quality both on and off the ball. We’re here to compete and see how we measure up against such a strong opponent.”

Regarding the security backdrop, Lazetić confirmed that discussions had taken place with his players but insisted, “We are only focusing on football.” Addressing Maccabi’s ongoing wait for a Europa League victory this season, he stated, “We will try to find our opportunities and do our best.”

On the absence of away fans, Lazetić expressed disappointment but remained pragmatic: “It’s sad, yes, but whether it’s fair or unfair, I don’t judge that. On the pitch, it’s 11 versus 11.” He also acknowledged that this unusual situation might serve as extra motivation for his players.

As preparations continue in this charged atmosphere, Lazetić and his team remain focused on delivering their best performance when they take on Aston Villa.
