A driver on the M6 narrowly avoided a catastrophic head-on collision after mistakenly traveling the wrong way for more than six kilometers.
On the evening of Saturday, November 22, Staffordshire Police responded to over 30 emergency calls reporting a red Ford heading southbound on the northbound carriageway between junction 15 and junction 14. Recognizing the imminent danger, officers immediately closed the northbound M6 at junction 14 to protect other road users.
The vehicle continued on the wrong side of the motorway for over six kilometers before coming to a stop in lane four, just inches away from a potential head-on collision. Remarkably, no injuries or damage occurred during the incident.

A spokesperson from the Staffordshire Road Crime Team commented: “Upon receiving numerous urgent calls, we acted swiftly to close the motorway and ensure public safety. The vehicle traveled over six kilometers the wrong way before stopping just shy of a head-on crash. Fortunately, no one was harmed, and the driver has voluntarily surrendered their license pending a full assessment by the DVLA and medical authorities.”
The police expressed gratitude for the public’s prompt reporting and compliance with motorway signals, which helped avert a serious accident.
