M5 Motorway Faces Major Delays as Storm Goretti Brings Snow and Lane Closures

Heavy snowfall from Storm Goretti has caused significant disruption on the M5, particularly on the northbound stretch between junctions 4 and 3 near Birmingham. As of 8:50 pm on Friday, January 8, two out of three lanes were closed, resulting in lengthy delays for drivers.

National Highways confirmed that traffic officers, snow ploughs, winter salting units, and heavy recovery teams were actively working to manage the situation and ensure safety. Traffic-monitoring cameras captured trucks sliding along the motorway just before 9 pm, highlighting the perilous driving conditions.

The Met Office has issued multiple severe weather warnings, including a red wind warning for the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall. Additionally, heavy snow is affecting the West Midlands overnight and into Friday morning, with Wales and Northern England also experiencing adverse conditions.
