After a demanding midweek schedule featuring matches against Wolves and Norwich City, Birmingham City manager Chris Davies is anticipated to make several changes for the upcoming fixture against Derby County at Pride Park. With the strain of recent games and significant travel, Davies has shown a tendency to rotate his squad towards the final match of a heavy run.
Although some rotation has occurred, particularly in the full-back positions where Alex Cochrane was rested midweek and Bright Osayi-Samuel substituted early at Carrow Road, most of the outfield players have played consistently. Carlos Vicente was also rested for the game against Wolves but has since impressed with improved form.
Going into the game against Derby, a side currently struggling for form, Davies may require his key players to deliver once more. Fitness concerns persist for Jhon Solis and Patrick Roberts, with Solis considered vital to the team’s midfield strength if fit. Demarai Gray remains sidelined.

Roberts is unlikely to start given Vicente’s resurgence, although he remains an important option off the bench to provide attacking spark. The absence of Solis was notably felt in the recent Norwich match, and if he is available, he is expected to reclaim his place in the starting eleven. This would mean a change in midfield, potentially replacing either Tomoki Iwata or Paik Seung-ho.
Iwata’s physical approach has been preferred in recent away games, but his possession play has been below par. Davies may favour a midfield partnership of Solis and Paik to balance defensive solidity with creativity. While Paik’s recent form has been inconsistent, his imaginative playstyle offers greater attacking impetus than Iwata’s.
Up front, Jay Stansfield is in good form and certain to start, while Liam Millar is also expected to feature prominently. Manager Davies may have considered resting August Priske but could be constrained by squad options. The choice between Luis Vazquez and Marvin Ducksch as a central striker remains a tactical question. Vazquez could offer unpredictability in attack, although Ducksch’s experience in the Championship and physical style might be better suited to facing Derby’s robust defence. Davies may prefer to maintain a line-up that has proved effective in away matches.
At present, only two changes are anticipated: Alex Cochrane returning at left-back for Kristoffer Lund, and Jhon Solis replacing Tomoki Iwata in midfield.
