Love locks attached to the iconic Sabrina Footbridge in Worcester are due to be removed as part of upcoming maintenance efforts. Couples who have placed locks on the bridge are being asked to reclaim their mementos before they are taken down and potentially discarded.
Worcestershire County Council has set a collection deadline of 1 September for those wishing to retrieve their locks. Officials describe this as an opportunity for individuals to preserve their personal keepsakes before the removal.
The practice of affixing love locks has become a popular tradition on the Sabrina Footbridge, mirroring customs seen in cities such as Paris, Cologne, and Barcelona.

Councillor Tom Wells, responsible for transport and roads, explained the necessity behind the removal: “Taking down the locks will enable us to undertake essential maintenance that will enhance the appearance and longevity of the bridge. We appreciate the sentimental value these locks hold, so we want to give people a chance to collect them before the work starts.”
Any locks not claimed by the 1 September deadline will be stored by the council until the end of the month. They can then be collected from Worcestershire County Council’s reception at Wildwood, Wildwood Drive, Worcester, between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
