Local Businesses Rally to Support Families Devastated by Wildfires in Stourbridge

Independent businesses throughout Stourbridge have come together to provide vital support to families affected by the recent wildfires, as the community starts the long process of recovery.

The fierce fire that broke out near Stourbridge Golf Course on Thursday, 13 August, destroyed 19 homes and caused damage to another 18, leaving many residents facing significant rebuilding challenges.

In response, local pubs, cafés, gyms and other independent businesses have generously opened their doors to assist those impacted directly or involved in volunteer efforts.

Black Country Barbell, a gym on Talbot Street, has offered access to its showers and changing facilities to displaced residents. Liam Hargreaves, the gym’s manager, explained: “Our community is at the heart of everything we do. When the fire happened and we saw the devastation, we knew we had to offer support. Providing showers and a place to change might seem small, but for those who have lost their homes, it can offer a moment of comfort during an incredibly difficult time. This is exactly when communities must come together.” These facilities are available from 9am to 5pm on weekdays, with no need to book.

On the high street, Cock ‘N’ Bull pub took to social media to offer a safe and welcoming space for those affected to “feel looked after for a little while.” Co-owner David Salmon shared: “Witnessing the fire’s impact was heartbreaking, especially as some of our own team had to evacuate. We wanted to provide somewhere for people to sit and gather their thoughts, charge their phones, and enjoy food and drinks. It has been humbling to see people find refuge here during such unsettling times. As a local business, we feel a responsibility to support our community whenever possible.”

The Sugar Loaf tearoom, which opened in Ryemarket just last year, has also stepped up by offering breakfast, hot drinks and a welcoming space for those directly affected. A social media post noted: “We initially planned a breakfast event for those impacted but, after consulting with the council, we learned that sufficient support was already in place. Instead, we prepared platters for volunteers at the Town Hall as a small token of thanks. We remain committed to helping the community as it heals and encourage anyone needing assistance to reach out.”

Beyond Stourbridge town centre, The Big Pet Store in Halesowen provided essential pet supplies including dog and cat food, treats, blankets and bowls to support local pet owners impacted by the wildfires. A spokesperson commented: “With many families forced to evacuate quickly, we wanted to ensure pets were not overlooked. This was a worrying time for us, especially since some of our customers and staff live nearby. We thank Arron, Sarah, and Adam from Tonks Property for delivering these supplies to Stourbridge.”

Numerous other local businesses have voiced similar support on social media, reflecting a community united in compassion and resilience as Stourbridge begins to recover from the blaze’s aftermath.
