Lloyds Banking Group, the UK’s largest digital bank serving 28 million customers, has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with the University of Glasgow to explore the transformative potential of agentic artificial intelligence (AI) in software and data engineering.
This four-year research partnership will focus on implementing agentic AI solutions at scale within Lloyds’ software engineering teams, aiming to enhance efficiency and innovation in digital banking services. As part of the collaboration, new academic positions including a PhD, a Masters of Research, and a post-doctoral research associate role will be established at the University of Glasgow to drive this initiative.
Agentic AI, which enables autonomous task management and decision-making within software processes, promises to empower human engineers by automating routine tasks and allowing them to concentrate on more complex, high-level challenges. Despite its promise, integrating agentic AI into large-scale, industry software practices remains underexplored.

Dr Tim Storer from the University of Glasgow’s School of Computing Science stated, “This collaboration is an exciting opportunity to bridge the gap between academic research and practical implementation. Our goal is to help Lloyds scale up software development while producing research that benefits the wider industry and shapes future policy.”
Echoing this sentiment, Dr Shane Montague of Lloyds Banking Group emphasized, “Our mission to Help Britain Prosper drives us to lead innovations that improve how engineering work is done. Partnering with the University of Glasgow allows us to gather real-world evidence to understand and responsibly apply agentic AI, enhancing the digital services we offer our customers.”
This pioneering partnership represents a significant step forward in digital banking innovation, combining academia and industry to harness AI’s full potential for the benefit of millions of customers and the wider tech community.
