Little-Known Dual-Purpose Speed Cameras Catch 25,000 Drivers for Minor Accelerations

A new generation of traffic light cameras equipped with dual-purpose technology is swiftly catching drivers across the UK, raising fresh warnings about road safety. In Nottinghamshire, East Midlands, these little-known “speed on green” cameras have already recorded nearly 25,000 speeding violations within 12 months, averaging almost 70 drivers each day.

Located at the A38 Kings Mill Road West junction with Sutton Road in Sutton-in-Ashfield, the cameras simultaneously monitor vehicles passing through traffic signals and measure their speed. This innovative technology targets motorists who accelerate slightly to beat traffic lights — even minor speed increases in 20mph or 30mph zones can trigger penalties.

Nicholas Lyes, Director of Policy and Standards at IAM RoadSmart, emphasized the importance of cautious driving around amber lights: “Many drivers don’t realize that unless there is a risk to others, it’s safer to stop when the lights turn amber rather than accelerate to beat the light.” He added that while these cameras may be unpopular, they have the potential to promote safer driving habits by enforcing both speed limits and adherence to signals.

Nottinghamshire Police’s Inspector Simon Allen highlighted the safety rationale behind the 30mph limit near the junction: “This limit is crucial because of the large number of children crossing daily to and from school. The cameras aren’t designed to catch people out but to reduce speed and prevent collisions.” He noted that extensive public education efforts preceded the cameras' activation to reduce violations.

Motoring expert Rhydian Jones of Confused.com pointed out a broader trend: “Over the last three years, more than 9 million drivers have been caught speeding, with a 14% increase in fines issued in 2024 compared to 2022.”

Simon Williams from the RAC added, “Speed cameras integrated with traffic light systems are largely unknown to many motorists, making awareness and cautious driving all the more essential.”

As these dual-purpose cameras become more widespread, drivers are urged to heed speed limits and traffic signals strictly to ensure safety and avoid penalties.
