Lidl Unveils Revised Plans for New Wolverhampton Penn Road Store, Replacing Goldthorn Hotel

Lidl has revealed updated plans for a new supermarket on Wolverhampton’s A449 Penn Road, where the iconic Goldthorn Hotel once stood. Although the retailer received planning permission in 2023, delays in securing the land have pushed back its development timeline, prompting Lidl to propose a redesigned store format that now requires a fresh planning application.

The latest proposal includes several improvements aimed at creating a modern, sustainable shopping experience. Highlights feature a larger car park, electric vehicle charging stations, an in-store bakery, solar panels, and Lidl’s popular “Middle of Lidl” section, offering customers a range of everyday essentials at low prices.

The Goldthorn Hotel, built in 1890 and known for hosting entertainers such as Bob Monkhouse and Diana Dors, was granted demolition consent earlier this year. The new Lidl store is expected to bring approximately 40 jobs to the area, contributing to the local economy and expanding retail options for shoppers.

While supporters welcome the development, some residents have voiced concerns, organizing a petition with over 100 signatures opposing the project. In response, Lidl has launched a public consultation to gather community feedback on the revised plans.

Joe Caunt, Lidl GB’s regional head of property, stated, “We have been eager to open a new store at this Penn Road location for some time. We’re excited to present these updated plans that showcase our latest store format, complete with a full product range and our popular in-store bakery. We encourage everyone to participate in the consultation and share their views as we move forward with the planning process.”
