Lidl Air Fryer Banned at UK Border Over Explosion Risk, Shoppers Warned

A popular Lidl air fryer has been barred from entering the UK after border officials identified significant safety concerns. The Silver Crest Air Fryer, model JD989A, has been rejected at the UK border because it failed to meet critical electrical safety standards, raising fears that it could potentially explode.

Manufactured in China, the appliance was found to present a “serious risk of fire” attributed to faulty electrical parts. UK regulators highlighted specific issues with the plug’s fuse and dimensions, stating that the fuse link lacked the necessary granular filler, and the plug’s live pin was narrower than the minimum size required by British safety standards (BS 1363). Without the granular filler, the fuse may overheat or even explode in fault conditions.

The regulatory statement emphasized that the product violates the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 and the Plugs & Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994, necessitating improvements in product documentation and markings to ensure safe operation.

In response to this incident, Lidl continues to affirm its commitment to responsible business practices. The supermarket recently joined the United Nations Global Compact initiative, committing to align its governance, operations, and strategies with principles supporting human rights, labour standards, environmental protection, and anti-corruption. This action reflects Lidl GB’s ongoing dedication to sustainable development goals, even as it handles challenges related to product safety compliance.

Shoppers are advised to remain cautious and check the safety certifications of electrical appliances, especially those imported or sourced internationally.
