Liberal Democrats Promise to Prioritize Safety and Cleanliness in Birmingham

The Liberal Democrats are fielding 101 candidates in the upcoming Birmingham City Council elections on May 7, aiming to secure at least 51 seats to take majority control. If they fall short, they hope to become the largest party to influence coalition talks.

Competing against full slates from the Conservatives, Green Party, Labour, and Reform, the Liberal Democrats also face candidates from the Workers’ Party (27), the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (7), Your Party (5), and over 70 independents.

Roger Harmer, the Liberal Democrat leader and a long-standing councillor for Acocks Green, where he is deeply involved in community initiatives, shares his message to voters.

A Cleaner, Safer Birmingham Where Residents Are Heard

Harmer vows that if elected, the Liberal Democrats will transform Birmingham into a cleaner, safer city, cracking down on anti-social behaviour and ensuring residents’ concerns are genuinely addressed.

He criticizes Labour’s mismanagement, highlighting the city’s bankruptcy, an unresolved bin strike, a dysfunctional IT system lasting over four years, steep council tax hikes (24% over three years), massive asset sales, and service cuts. These issues, he claims, have left Birmingham dirty, with pothole-ridden roads and deteriorating public trust.

With both Labour and Conservatives losing national support, the Liberal Democrats aim to lead a progressive alliance focused on residents’ priorities.

Harmer points to costly failures like the unused Athletes’ Village and poor contract oversight as symptoms of a broken political leadership. Correcting these requires shifting council priorities to align with the community’s needs.

Key Priorities:

  • Clean Up the City: Ending the bin strike and overhauling street cleansing and waste management are urgent tasks to improve Birmingham’s sanitation.

  • Tackle Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour: Harmer emphasizes restoring respect for rules, addressing speeding, illegal developments, fly-tipping, and littering. He calls for stronger regulation of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) to control their rapid growth and protect community cohesion.

  • Empower Residents: The council must genuinely listen and respond to residents by devolving decisions to neighbourhood levels, encouraging local engagement, and making the council a true reflection of the communities it serves, rather than a distant authority.

Harmer concludes by reaffirming the Liberal Democrats’ commitment to restoring pride, safety, and cleanliness to Birmingham through responsive governance rooted in residents’ voices.
