Leeds Building Society Blocks Online Mortgage Access From July 9, Sparking Customer Frustration

Leeds Building Society has announced it will disable online access to mortgage balances and transaction details starting July 9, 2026, causing frustration among thousands of its customers. The building society informed mortgage holders via email that they would no longer be able to check their mortgage information through its online platform.

The message read: “We’re getting in touch to let you know that from 9 July 2026 you’ll no longer be able to view your mortgage balance or transactions online. We’re sorry if this causes you any inconvenience.”

This unexpected change has been met with criticism on social media platforms including LinkedIn, where customers questioned the decision and expressed their dissatisfaction. One user remarked, “Have I just been teleported back to 1995? Who thought it was a good idea to remove online access and call this an upgrade? Should I now take time off work to visit a branch or wait in phone queues just to check my mortgage balance?”

Another customer simply described the move as “quite frustrating.”

In response to the backlash, a Leeds Building Society spokesperson clarified that this change is part of a broader system upgrade. “We’re really sorry for the frustration this has caused. During this upgrade period, mortgage balances and payments will not be available online. However, members can still call us to check their mortgage details, and we will continue to send annual statements,” they said.

The spokesperson also acknowledged the uncertainty over when online mortgage access will be restored: “We understand members want to know when the service will return, and while we can’t confirm anything at this point, we will share updates as soon as possible.”

This disruption comes shortly after Leeds Building Society appointed Annette Barnes as its new permanent Chief Executive Officer. Barnes, who was serving as Interim CEO, becomes the first woman to hold this position in the society’s 151-year history, following a thorough recruitment process by the Board.
