Latest Midlands Ofsted Ratings Reveal New ‘Exceptional’ Grade as Inspection System Overhauled

Schools across the West Midlands have recently received updated ratings under Ofsted’s revamped inspection system, marking a significant change in how educational standards are assessed.

Moving away from the traditional one-word overall grades, which many headteachers found overly simplistic and sometimes unfair, the new system evaluates schools across multiple categories. This shift allows for a more nuanced assessment, giving parents and communities a clearer understanding of a school’s performance.

Under this new framework, the previous ratings like “Outstanding” and “Inadequate” have been replaced. The highest accolade a school can now earn is “Exceptional,” while the lowest is “Urgent Improvement.” These fresh categories aim to provide a broader and more detailed picture of school quality.

Goldsmith Primary Academy in Walsall made history as the first school in the West Midlands to receive “Exceptional” marks in certain inspection areas. However, in the latest round of inspections, no schools achieved an exceptional overall rating, though several demonstrated strong performances.

For example, St Luke’s Church of England Primary in Cannock earned “Strong Standard” ratings across all seven evaluated areas, the second-highest grade. Holy Rosary Catholic Primary secured “Strong Standard” in five categories, while Fordbridge Community Primary in Chelmsley Wood achieved this rating in four areas.

This new approach by Ofsted signals a move toward more transparent and balanced school assessments, ensuring that parents and educators have access to detailed information to support school improvement and choice.
