The last remaining Post Office in Birmingham city centre, operated by TG Jones (formerly WHSmith), has been listed to let, causing uncertainty about its continued operation. The premises on Union Street have appeared on the property site Completely Retail, with offers being sought around £275,000, exclusive of rates and a service charge totaling £26,309.
TG Jones took over the WHSmith Post Office branch in July 2025; however, by the following year, reports indicated the company was experiencing a long-term decline in sales and considerable financial difficulties. While TG Jones has not commented on the situation, the Post Office has confirmed it has not received any resignation notice from the operator.
A spokesperson stated, “Birmingham Post Office remains open as usual. We have not received a resignation from TG Jones, the branch operator, and customers are encouraged to continue using the branch for banking and parcel services.”

Elsewhere, TG Jones has announced closures of other Post Office branches, including those in Sutton Coldfield and Tamworth.
The Union Street area itself is at the centre of significant redevelopment plans. On Tuesday, 22 September, a public consultation commenced for the site formerly occupied by the Rackhams department store. Although full details are pending, plans propose up to 500 new homes and 21,000 square metres of office space.
These proposals are part of the wider Birmingham Central Heart scheme, which envisions approximately 5,000 new homes and 400,000 square metres of commercial development in the vicinity. If approved, this redevelopment will involve demolishing much of the existing neighbourhood, including the block directly opposite the TG Jones branch. The space is intended for the new Martineau Place development.
