Laird and Osman Set to Start – Birmingham City’s Predicted Lineup for Wrexham Clash

Chris Davies faces a tough decision as he fine-tunes Birmingham City’s lineup ahead of their Championship showdown against Wrexham. The Blues’ recent loss to Ipswich Town has highlighted issues in the full-back positions, putting pressure on Davies to make key adjustments.

Bright Osayi-Samuel and Jonathan Panzo both struggled during the Easter Monday defeat, contributing to Ipswich’s goals. Panzo’s involvement in the conceding of both goals and Osayi-Samuel’s lapse allowing Ben Johnson to equalize have exposed vulnerabilities at the back.

Despite having options, injuries have limited Davies’ ability to field his preferred back four. Ethan Laird has featured primarily at left-back this season, with hamstring problems restricting his appearances at right-back. He replaced Panzo at left-back during the Ipswich game, and given the absence of fit alternatives like Alex Cochrane, Kai Wagner, and Lee Buchanan, Laird might continue in that role.

On the right, Tomoki Iwata is expected to secure the starting spot, shifting from midfield to defence based on Davies’ recent assessments. In central defence, Phil Neumann will partner Christoph Klarer for the remainder of the season, as stability in this department is paramount.

In midfield, Jhon Solis is slated to start alongside Tommy Doyle if Paik Seung-ho’s ankle injury doesn’t improve. Paik’s condition remains uncertain following the Ipswich match.

Upfront, while Patrick Roberts might have been a go-to for home fixtures in the past, current form and tactical needs place Carlos Vicente as a key figure following his goal and solid display last week. On the wings, the choice between Demarai Gray and Ibrahim Osman is challenging. Gray put in a diligent performance without much flair, whereas Osman’s dynamic entrance against Ipswich left a strong impression. Recent form suggests Osman could earn the nod.

Striking options involve a dilemma between the experience of Marvin Ducksch and the promising partnership of Jay Stansfield and August Priske. Despite Ducksch’s scoring record, supporters and form indicate Stansfield and Priske deserve continuity upfront.

Predicted Birmingham City XI (4-2-3-1): Beadle; Iwata, Neumann, Klarer, Laird; Doyle, Solis; Vicente, Stansfield, Osman; Priske.
