Labour MP Calls for PIP Benefits to Be Scrapped for Mild ADHD and Anxiety Cases

A Labour MP has openly challenged the current Personal Independence Payment (PIP) system, stating that people with mild ADHD and anxiety should not automatically receive benefits. Sojan Joseph emphasized the need for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to distinguish between conditions that genuinely prevent work and those that do not.

“Some conditions are severe, but most are not,” Joseph said. “You can’t generalize that all individuals with ADHD or autism are unable to work or should be on benefits. The system must assess the severity of each case, something the current approach fails to do.”

Joseph highlighted the difficulty of transitioning people off benefits once they start claiming them. He advocated for early intervention: “Long-term efforts must focus on identifying these conditions in children at a younger age, providing support during their schooling.”

He also pointed out the fluctuating nature of many mental health conditions, explaining: “People can experience periods of ill health and then recover. Treatment should enable them to return to work, which itself has a therapeutic effect.”

Acknowledging this would not be an immediate transformation, Joseph urged for swift action. “This change can’t be delayed any longer. We have a lost generation due to years of inaction.”

He reassured that efforts are underway to ensure a smooth transition: “I hope the process will cause minimal disruption. We’re working to make this transition as seamless as possible.”

Joseph also expressed optimism about future leadership, noting, “I understand Andy Burnham, should he become prime minister, is already engaging with departments to prepare for these reforms.”
