Kyogo Furuhashi Departure Highlights Birmingham City’s Failed Transfer Window

Football clubs reveal their true intentions not through words, but through actions.

Birmingham City entered last summer’s transfer window with confidence, bringing in a dozen new players to a squad many believed was already Championship-ready after dominating League One. Each signing expressed ambition and dedication in front of the Blues TV cameras, fueling growing optimism about a promotion push.

However, the season told a different story. Birmingham only briefly contested a playoff spot—once in December after beating Watford, and again in February following a 2-1 victory at Norwich. Both times, the team fell short of breaking firmly into the top six.

By then, it was clear what manager Chris Davies and the club made of the previous summer’s recruitment: the team had not been strengthened in the right way.

Kyogo Furuhashi, the marquee signing, largely failed to make an impact, becoming more of a liability than a goal threat. Kanya Fujimoto scarcely featured, while others like Jack Robinson and Tommy Doyle saw limited game time. Loanees Lewis Koumas and Eiran Cashin departed unexpectedly before the January window closed.

Marvin Ducksch’s respectable goal tally masked his unsuitability for a physically demanding Championship side that prioritizes aggressive pressing—something scouted errors should have revealed pre-signing.

Bright Osayi-Samuel’s performances were inconsistent, and while young goalkeeper James Beadle faced criticism, both improved as the season progressed. On a positive note, Phil Neumann, Demarai Gray, and Patrick Roberts showed promise despite challenges, marking them as reasonable recruitment choices.

Overall, last summer’s transfer activity generated much excitement but ultimately proved a missed opportunity.

The January window began the process of correction, with new signings August Priske, Jhon Solis, and Carlos Vicente adjusting well and bolstering the squad’s strength.

Offloading players who no longer fit—Koumas, Cashin, Doyle—and especially the departure of Kyogo Furuhashi to LA Galaxy, marks a crucial step in righting the club’s course this summer. Birmingham City now faces the task of unraveling last year’s mistakes to build a more competitive team for the coming season.
