When we think of royal dining, images of extravagant banquets or rare delicacies often come to mind. However, King Charles III enjoys a humble and delicious breakfast dish that anyone can recreate in their own kitchen.
The recipe, called Cheesy Baked Eggs, was shared by Clarence House in 2020, back when Charles was still the Prince of Wales. The dish uses just seven ingredients and highlights simple, fresh flavors, proving that royal cuisine doesn’t always have to be elaborate or expensive.
Clarence House’s recipe starts with buttering a baking dish and layering wilted greens and tomatoes around the edges, creating a colorful, tasty base. Sprinkle creamy cheese and chopped basil over the vegetables, adding seasoning and optional sliced cold meats if you like.

Next, create a well in the center of the dish, season it with salt and pepper, then carefully crack in an egg. Pour 80ml of double cream over the egg without breaking the yolk, then top with a generous layer of grated hard cheese.
Bake in a hot oven at 180°C (350°F) for 8 to 10 minutes, then allow it to rest for a few minutes before serving. The result is a comforting, rich breakfast that King Charles often enjoys.
This love of baked eggs runs in the royal family. Tom Parker Bowles, son of Queen Camilla, shares that he grew up enjoying a similar dish, known as Oeufs en Cocotte, after holidays when the fridge was running low. Baked eggs have been a royal staple from Queen Victoria to the present day.
Parker Bowles’s book, Cooking and The Crown, contains over 100 recipes inspired by royal menus past and present, combining both elaborate and simple dishes fit for everyday cooking at home.
