Major League Soccer (MLS) pundits across the United States are closely analysing the impressive turnaround of Philadelphia Union’s season. When the league paused for the World Cup at the end of May, Philadelphia Union were languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
At this point in time, Kai Wagner was on holiday, reflecting on a period during which he had played 53 matches spread between Philadelphia Union and Birmingham City.
Just two months after the pause, Wagner rejoined Philadelphia Union as a new signing, less than half a year after departing the club for Birmingham City. Reports suggest that Wagner and his family struggled to settle in Birmingham, maintaining a strong connection to Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, Birmingham City have been managing effectively in Wagner’s absence. The emergence of Alex Cochrane, along with squad depth provided by Kristoffer Lund and Lee Buchanan, has mitigated the impact of Wagner’s departure.
However, Wagner’s influence upon returning to Philadelphia has been significant. Known affectionately as the ‘Assist King’ by Union supporters, he resumed his role with immediate effect, registering an assist in their 3-1 victory over New York Red Bulls when MLS action resumed on 23 July. Shortly after, he contributed to a 1-0 win over the Seattle Sounders.
A standout moment came when Wagner delivered an outstanding performance in a thrilling match against Atlanta United. The Union came from two goals behind to win 3-2, with Wagner assisting all three goals, including two in stoppage time to complete the remarkable comeback.
Philadelphia Union’s progress up the MLS table has been striking. From a solitary win in the first 15 games, they have since claimed nine victories and two draws in their last 11 matches. Wagner has remained unbeaten in these 11 appearances since his return, with the team now positioned sixth in the table, on track for a place in the end-of-season play-offs.

“Statistically, Wagner has been one of the league’s best left-backs since play resumed, continuing to provide dangerous service and generating high-quality scoring opportunities.
“Moreover, he adds a unique intensity, both tactically and emotionally, giving everything on the pitch regardless of the match situation.
“I am confident in saying that Wagner’s return has been the single biggest factor in the team’s resurgence and that he will be remembered as a club legend in Philadelphia.”
