John Townley’s Player Ratings as Aston Villa Suffer 4-1 Defeat at Arsenal

Aston Villa’s impressive 11-match winning streak came to an end following a 4-1 loss against Premier League leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Gabriel, making his return to Arsenal’s starting lineup, opened the scoring early in the second half with a goal from a corner. Martin Zubimendi quickly followed, doubling Arsenal’s lead just minutes later. Leandro Trossard added a third goal shortly after the hour mark, and Gabriel Jesus sealed the victory with a fourth after coming off the bench. Ollie Watkins managed a late consolation goal for Villa in stoppage time.

This defeat marks Villa’s first in nearly two months since their loss at Liverpool in early November.

The match began with Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres missing an early headed chance, allowing Villa to settle. With Declan Rice absent for Arsenal, Villa’s Amadou Onana controlled midfield play with powerful runs but was forced off with an injury at halftime. Early chances for Villa came from Ezri Konsa’s interception and a pass to Ollie Watkins, although Watkins was unable to convert.

Youri Tielemans provided a precise pass leading to Jadon Sancho’s promising attempt, but Villa struggled to find consistent attacking rhythm. Villa defended well in the first half, with William Saliba denying several goal attempts, though an offside flag ended a promising moment.

Villa entered the game undefeated in their previous two away matches at Arsenal, including a 2-0 win in April and a 2-2 draw earlier this season. However, Arsenal’s dominance after halftime made a comeback unlikely.

Gabriel’s opener came after beating Emi Martinez in the air from a corner, and Zubimendi’s goal soon after increased the lead. Trossard’s long-range strike put Arsenal three goals ahead, with Gabriel Jesus adding a fourth moments after his introduction.

Despite the loss, Ollie Watkins scored late to reduce the deficit, highlighting Villa’s resilience.
