John Townley’s Aston Villa Player Ratings After 2-0 Victory Over Lille

Aston Villa booked their place in the Europa League quarter-finals with a commanding 2-0 victory over Lille at Villa Park, sealing a 3-0 aggregate victory. John McGinn opened the scoring with his first goal since overcoming a knee injury, firing in front of the Holte End, before Leon Bailey came off the bench to wrap up the win.

This latest triumph marks Villa’s seventh consecutive win in the Europa League, a streak only surpassed by Chelsea’s eight straight victories between 2013 and 2018, which included winning the competition in the 2012-13 season.

Villa started the match strongly. Within three minutes, Douglas Luiz was denied by a defensive block after Jadon Sancho’s clever cut-back. Sancho was central to Villa’s attacking threat again soon after, though his cross to Tammy Abraham was intercepted. Lille responded with a notable chance when Romain Perraud found Ayyoub Bouaddi, whose header narrowly cleared the bar.

Morgan Rogers showed glimpses of promise but lacked precision in key passes that could have created one-on-one opportunities for Sancho and Abraham. Amadou Onana went closest to scoring in the first half, heading a McGinn corner that forced Lille’s goalkeeper Berke Ozer into a crucial save.

Despite dominating 60% of possession in the first half, Aston Villa allowed Lille to build patiently from the back, focusing on maintaining defensive solidity with a compact block and seeking to counterattack.

Their strategy paid off in the 54th minute when Emi Martinez launched a pinpoint ball to Sancho, who cut inside and laid the ball perfectly for McGinn to calmly slot it home, doubling Villa’s aggregate advantage.

Sancho almost added another shortly after, his shot rattling the post. Ollie Watkins, brought on for Abraham, played a key role by assisting Leon Bailey’s goal, who slotted into an empty net to secure the victory.
