John Lewis is recruiting 10,400 seasonal workers for the Christmas period, offering pay rates of up to £14.80 per hour. Of these positions, 6,000 are available at Waitrose’s 320 supermarket branches, while John Lewis’s 36 department stores are offering 2,600 roles.
In addition, 1,800 seasonal vacancies will support the company’s distribution centres and supply chains. Pay for these temporary roles starts at £13.00 per hour outside London, rising to £13.25 after 30 days, with London rates commencing at £14.55 and increasing to £14.80 after a month.
Successful candidates will benefit from training programmes as well as flexible and blended working arrangements. Helen Webb, Chief People Officer of the John Lewis Partnership, highlighted the inclusive nature of these roles, stating they attract candidates of all ages and backgrounds.

Webb emphasised the importance of retail jobs as an entry point for young people into the workforce, noting the ongoing challenges of youth unemployment. She said: “Our seasonal roles are more than just a job for the festive period; for many, they are a catalyst for building confidence and kickstarting a long-term career. By offering thousands of roles to under-25s and guaranteeing interviews for care-experienced young people, we are actively helping to break down barriers to employment and investing in the future of our communities.”
Meanwhile, John Lewis has launched its online Christmas Shop ahead of the festive rush. Following the World Cup final, searches for “Christmas” surged by over 33% week-on-week, signalling an early start to customers’ seasonal preparations.
