John Lewis and Waitrose Introduce New £13 Minimum Hourly Wage for Shop Floor Staff

John Lewis is set to implement a 6.9% pay increase for its shop floor employees, ensuring a minimum hourly wage of £13.25. This move comes as the retailer addresses concerns from its partners who have been without an annual bonus for the past four years.

As part of an investment totaling £108 million, John Lewis will raise wages for the majority of its 69,000 partners. For shop floor staff, this translates to an average annual increase of around £1,600, surpassing the current inflation rate of 3.4% recorded in December.

In addition to the new minimum rate, staff with longer service or those living in London and nearby areas will benefit from higher hourly wages. Helen Webb, Chief People Officer at John Lewis, emphasized that the investment aims to put more money directly into the pockets of their partners every month, demonstrating a consistent and sustained commitment to fair pay.

This announcement coincides with a significant expansion in John Lewis’s fashion division. The retailer will spotlight the exclusive return of iconic brands Topshop and Topman to physical stores, alongside the introduction of 14 new brands for the upcoming season. This fashion initiative is part of a larger £800 million multi-year investment designed to enhance the overall shopping experience across the UK.

Following the recent renovation of its Oxford Street flagship’s fashion floors, John Lewis continues to solidify its position as a leading British fashion destination. Peter Ruis, Managing Director of John Lewis, stated, “Securing Topshop exclusively, alongside other exciting brands, underscores our ambition to be the definitive style authority on the British high street.”
