Healey, who resigned as Defence Secretary under Sir Keir Starmer’s tenure due to funding concerns, now assumes a critical role in managing the nation’s finances.
When questioned by broadcasters about meeting the government’s target of allocating 3% of the national economic output to defence by 2030, Healey emphasized the importance of fiscal discipline. “Fiscal control is the first duty of any chancellor. It is mine. And fiscal credibility is the bedrock for economic stability and for national security,” he stated. Healey reaffirmed the government’s commitment to defense spending, citing recent remarks from the Prime Minister about meeting international obligations amid increasing global threats.
Healey’s appointment reflects Burnham’s preference for departmental continuity. Miliband, initially the frontrunner for Chancellor, faced resistance from financial sectors and unions, leading to his appointment as Foreign Secretary instead. Meanwhile, Mahmood reportedly declined to leave her current role, prompting Burnham’s Cabinet finalization, which also includes Yvette Cooper as Health Secretary and Wes Streeting as Defence Secretary.
