Jay Stansfield: Embracing Change and Support Amid Birmingham City Challenges

Jay Stansfield, despite a challenging 12-game goal drought—the longest of his Birmingham City career—remains composed and positive. He has experienced similar stretches only once before, during a loan at Exeter City as a 19-year-old. Now, with 45 goals in 120 appearances for Birmingham, Stansfield’s mindset has evolved significantly.

After missing a clear chance in the recent match against Stoke City, Stansfield emphasized that the missed opportunity wouldn’t weigh on him. “I haven’t scored for 12 games, but I’ve learnt how to handle it without letting it affect my performance or contribution to the team,” he shared. He highlighted his growth, noting last year’s self-doubt has given way to a focus on supporting the team in various roles.

This transformation is largely credited to his work with a sports psychologist, which helped Stansfield manage pressure and maintain confidence despite criticism. He now feels relief sharing the scoring responsibility with other talented teammates, saying, “It’s taken that edge away and made me enjoy football more.”

The summer signings of Marvin Ducksch, Kyogo Furuhashi, and August Priske have eased the burden on Stansfield. His partnership with Ducksch has been particularly effective, with the duo adapting fluidly within Chris Davies’ 4-2-3-1 formation. Stansfield spoke highly of Ducksch’s role as a focal point, noting the versatility they bring to the attack.

Regarding his position on the pitch, Stansfield remains adaptable. Whether playing as a striker, number 10, or out wide, he is committed to filling the role the manager requires. He enjoys the creative aspects of playing behind the striker but remains ready to win aerial duels or track back when needed.

Despite this goal drought, Stansfield’s overall contribution remains vital. With eight goals and five assists this season—more than any other Blues player—he continues to lead Birmingham City’s attacking efforts. No matter where he plays, Stansfield is integral to the team’s ambitions and remains optimistic about breaking his scoring spell soon.
