Peter McClure, a 65-year-old resident of Dunley near Stourport, was diagnosed with prostate cancer—the UK’s most common cancer—after requesting a PSA test in January 2025. Known for his active lifestyle that included walking holidays, gardening, and golf, Peter found himself facing new challenges after his diagnosis.
Following medical advice to lose weight ahead of his scheduled surgery in August, Peter joined the Always Active exercise group in Stourport-on-Severn in June 2025. The group offers tailored fitness classes designed to support cancer patients through gentle, effective exercise combined with social interaction.
“Although I was already fairly fit,” Peter explains, “attending the Always Active classes introduced me to exercises I hadn’t been doing at home, and participating in a group made it more enjoyable.” The program not only helped him shed the required pounds but also provided a valuable environment where he could connect with others who had gone through similar experiences.

Alongside the fitness classes, Peter embraced walking football sessions recommended by the group. These activities collectively enhanced his fitness and helped him reach his weight-loss target before surgery.
“Achieving that fitness level before surgery gave me confidence and made recovery smoother,” Peter says. By October, just two months after his operation, he was back engaging in walking football and even playing golf again.
Beyond physical improvements, Peter highlights the emotional benefits of his involvement with the group. “Sharing experiences with fellow cancer patients has been invaluable for my mental health. The exercise sessions foster both physical fitness and a sense of community.”
Today, Peter describes himself as fitter than ever before his diagnosis, maintaining his weight loss and staying active through walking, home workouts, and golf. Regular PSA checks remain part of his routine as he continues his journey.
“Living in Worcestershire has made managing my diagnosis and treatment much more bearable,” Peter reflects. “The support has been welcoming and considerate, without any barriers.”
