‘It’s Been a Pleasure’ – Solihull Business Closes After Nearly 50 Years

After serving the Solihull community for nearly 50 years, Mahoney’s DIY has closed its doors on Old Lode Lane, marking the end of an era for the family-run building materials business. The closure follows the sale of the builder’s yard, with Bond Wolfe confirming a bid of £1.25 million.

While the Solihull site has shut down, Mahoney’s has assured customers that its Streetly location will continue operating. Throughout its decades of service, Mahoney’s has been more than just a supply outlet—it has been a workplace where young people gained valuable experience, staff formed lasting bonds, and customers found reliable support.

In a heartfelt message posted on social media, the Mahoney family expressed deep gratitude: “It’s been a pleasure serving Solihull and the surrounding areas. We thank our hard-working and loyal staff, some of whom are moving on to new chapters, others retiring. You’ve all been part of our family.”

They also remembered those who helped grow the business from its early days under Mick and Julia’s leadership. “Many former team members have moved on to successful careers or well-earned retirements; some are sadly missed. Mahoney’s was a place where youngsters thrived while studying, gaining real-world work experience.”

Acknowledging the support of customers through various challenges—including recessions, austerity, the cost of living crisis, and the pandemic—the message concludes with heartfelt thanks: “Your loyalty meant the world. From all of us—John, Karen, Dick, and the Mahoney family—thank you and wishing everyone the very best.”
