Heartlands Hospital, one of Birmingham’s busiest medical centres, has initiated an investigation after a patient reported unsuitable conditions in its Accident and Emergency (A&E) department. Shafaq Ahmed, from Hall Green, attended the A&E on 14 August feeling unwell and experienced a seven-hour wait. During this time, Mr Ahmed observed a range of issues including long queues, damaged seating, and litter such as empty bottles and cups scattered around the waiting area. Notably, blood and blood-stained tissues were reportedly found on the floor.
Mr Ahmed also highlighted that the department had only one toilet available, which was out of order during his visit. He recounted seeing a box of face masks picked up from the floor and then placed back onto a trolley. Witnessing these conditions left him feeling “deeply uncomfortable and saddened.”
“When I arrived, the department was extremely busy and noisy,” Mr Ahmed said. “I had to raise my voice at reception to provide personal details, which made me concerned about my privacy as others could overhear. The frontline staff were clearly under immense pressure and working hard under difficult circumstances.”

He added that his concerns were not directed at the staff but rather the environment and facility management. “There were more people than available seats, with some patients standing inside and outside the reception area. At one point, I saw a lady lying on the floor, which was shocking to witness in an NHS hospital. The seating was mostly damaged and uncomfortable, rubbish was everywhere, and some patients left after waiting for hours, seeking care elsewhere. Patients deserve better conditions.”
A spokesperson for University Hospital Birmingham, which manages Heartlands Hospital, stated: “We expect our facilities to be clean, safe, and maintained to appropriate standards for patients and visitors. We are currently looking into the issues raised and will take action where necessary to address them.”
