Interest on All Plan 2 Student Loans in England Could Be Abolished

The Conservative Party has pledged to eliminate the high interest rates on Plan 2 student loans if they win the next general election, aiming to relieve graduates from mounting debt burdens. Kemi Badenoch, the Tory leader, criticized the current system as an unjust “debt trap” that forces many graduates to pay back more than they originally borrowed.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson acknowledged that Plan 2 loans have flaws but emphasized the government’s focus on providing maintenance grants to support disadvantaged students over changing interest policies. Speaking with the BBC, she pointed out that the existing system was inherited and originally established by the Conservatives themselves.

The Conservative proposal targets the real interest rates on Plan 2 loans, which can result in graduates owing tens of thousands of pounds more than their initial tuition fees. Badenoch highlighted the bleak prospects for young people under Labour, citing record-low graduate recruitment and high youth unemployment. She argued that many graduates, despite consistent repayments, see their debt balloon due to rapidly accumulating interest.

Badenoch urged Labour and Treasury Secretary Rachel Reeves to adopt their plan in the upcoming spring statement, describing the plan as a vital intervention for young graduates and their families. Meanwhile, Phillipson criticized the Conservatives for criticizing a system they created, while also accusing them of discouraging university education for some young people despite benefiting from it themselves.

The debate continues as political parties challenge each other over handling student loan debt, with potential major policy shifts poised to impact thousands of graduates across England.
