Inspiring Northfield Mum Transforms Career Adversity into Thriving Business

Emma Hewitt’s life took an unexpected turn in 2016 when she lost her job during maternity leave. Working in university international student recruitment, her role involved extensive travel abroad. When offered a part-time alternative, she was not given the opportunity to stay on.

Rather than despairing, Emma seized the chance to start her own venture by franchising Mum2Mum Markets. This involved organising events for parents to buy and sell pre-loved baby goods, an initiative that matched her life as a mother. However, as her children grew older, Emma sought greater challenges and found inspiration by entering an award herself.

“Losing my job was tough, and I lost confidence,” Emma reflected. “But in hindsight, it set me on a new path I wouldn’t have chosen otherwise. Sometimes, things happen for a reason.”

Emma, a Northfield resident with children aged ten and eight, credits entering an award in May 2024 as the catalyst for her next business idea. The experience of being a finalist highlighted the value of recognition and connection.

“Being among other nominees and seeing the power of acknowledgment was uplifting,” she explained. “I’d already considered teaching people to write award entries, but that day I realised I needed to help more people access opportunities like that.”

Today, Emma works as an awards advisor, guiding clients to use awards strategically to grow their businesses. She helps select awards aligned with clients’ goals to enhance visibility, credibility, and opportunity.

“Winning a trophy is only part of the process,” Emma said. “The real benefit is in writing the entry. It’s a reflective exercise that helps people recognise their achievements and strengths. Many discover they are more capable than they previously thought, which is incredibly empowering.”

She emphasises that simply being nominated or a finalist offers valuable exposure and a platform to positively share one’s business story.

“Confidence and credibility grow at every stage. Most of my clients are women who often undervalue their unique contributions. The awards process helps them see their true worth,” Emma added.

Over recent years, Emma has supported numerous small business owners, noting how the experience boosts their confidence and expands their networks.

Reflecting on her journey, Emma acknowledges that losing her job was challenging but ultimately transformative.

“It wasn’t a straightforward path. I started by working under other brands, but now I embrace the power of self-recognition through awards. Writing entries involves deep reflection and often uncovers achievements that had been overlooked,” she said. “Using awards strategically offers a refreshing and creative way to grow a business.”
