The family of Ali Syed, affectionately known as Alex, have paid moving tributes to the Birmingham father-of-three who passed away tragically while climbing Ben Nevis last month. Ali, 58, from Acocks Green, suffered a fatal accident during a trek in the Scottish Highlands on February 19. His body was recovered the following day with assistance from RAF Lossiemouth.
Ali’s daughter Sunnah described her father as ‘inspirational and unforgettable,’ highlighting his infectious smile and boundless spirit. “My dad’s smile was contagious. He always had a story to share and could light up any room with his laughter,” she said.
A trailblazer in his family, Ali was the first to achieve higher education, earning a 2:1 degree in mechanical engineering. Throughout his life, he mastered many trades—from professional builder and plumber to property investor and car importer—excelling at everything he set his mind to.

Sunnah painted a vivid picture of her father’s adventurous nature: “He was bold and daring, loving the outdoors in all weather, especially snow. He thrived on exploring and embracing challenges. Most of all, he loved sharing these experiences and inspiring others to believe ‘Yes, You Can.’”
Born in Sylhet, Bangladesh, Ali moved to Birmingham at the age of four. He left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him, remembered not only for his kindness and wisdom but also his mischievous charm.
His funeral was held at the Jami Masjid Mosque in Small Heath on February 28, followed by burial at Sutton Coldfield Cemetery. Ali is survived by his children Yaaseen, Armaan, and Sunnah.
Friends described him as a straight-talking, loyal friend with a big heart and an unmissable presence. One friend reflected, “He told it like it was, always from a place of love. I will miss him dearly.” Another added, “He was a real character—intelligent, funny, down to earth, and always ready to help. There was never a dull moment with him around.”
Ali Syed’s legacy encourages us all to live life boldly, embrace new challenges, and do so with a smile.
