Inside Tim Hortons Birmingham City Centre’s Failed Hygiene Inspection and Cockroach Infestation

A recent hygiene inspection has exposed serious cleanliness and pest control issues at the Tim Hortons branch in Birmingham city centre. On December 16, the coffee shop was awarded a score of just one out of five by local authorities, a rating that highlights major failings since any score below three is considered unacceptable.

BirminghamLive obtained the hygiene report detailing the findings, which included the unsettling discovery of dead cockroaches and mouse droppings within the premises. Alarmingly, staff had previously found a live cockroach inside the ice machine, prompting immediate fogging treatments before the inspection.

During the visit, the inspector found dead cockroaches scattered on the basement floor. One of these cockroaches carried an egg case capable of producing between 10 and 40 new cockroaches. Additional cockroaches were caught in monitoring traps, indicating an ongoing infestation problem.

Rodent activity was also evident, with numerous mouse droppings found in several locations, including on the floor, the coffee shelf area, and underneath the staircase near the upper-dining area.

The inspection report described the overall cleaning and pest control efforts as “poor,” stressing the urgent need for enhanced staff training and supervision to address these critical hygiene failures.

Tim Hortons was asked to provide pest control records for further review as part of the investigation. As of March 18, the Birmingham city centre Tim Hortons remains the only UK location listed as failing food hygiene standards on the Food Standards Agency website.
